Voters in the city of Washington will decide whether a hotel-motel tax should be implemented this November. Tourism officials like the chamber’s Tim Coffey say it would be a good source of revenue to entice new visitors. However hotel owners, like the Hawkeye Motel’s Gordon Olberding, say most of their customers are in town for business, not recreation. If approved, the tax would collect seven percent of gross receipts collected from renting rooms in a hotel. The money would be used exclusively for recreational, convention, cultural or entertainment facilities.
