Building a home in rural Washington County could become more challenging under a proposed zoning ordinance. Steve Greenleaf is an Iowa City based attorney who specializes in land use. He says Johnson County’s zoning ordinance has slowed residential development in unincorporated areas. Greenleaf says the small towns he serves have seen a rise in population over the last ten years, possibly due to county zoning. Washington County’s ordinance would require people to purchase at least 35 acres of land to build in an agricultural area.
