ISU Extensions Warns of Confinement Explosions

Posted: Tuesday, October 13th, 2009 at 6:16 am

The ISU Extension service is warning hog confinement operators about the risk of fire and explosions. Ag engineers say liquid manure in pits underneath these facilities decompose slowly, and releases two flammable gases. They say operators should review their emergency plans, turn off electrical power to non ventilation equipment before pumping or agitating and keep people out of the building during pumping and agitation. They also say it’s important to run fans at maximum speed. For more information contact the ISU Extension Service.
