School Breakfasts Down in Iowa

press play to hear from Foodshare President Gloria McAdam

A new study suggests that some Iowa school children are skipping what’s known as the most important meal of the day. The Food Research and Action Center says the number of kids participating in the School Breakfast Program is down by about one percent over a year’s time. They say because of this, the state is missing out on at least seven million dollars in federal funding. Foodshare President Gloria McAdam says schools also need to offer a morning meal because many students who arrive by bus don’t have time to eat breakfast. Iowa currently has no requirement for schools to participate in the free breakfast program.
