Alice P. Smith, age 86, of Washington died Monday January 25, 2010 at the United Presbyterian Home following a sudden illness.

Alice’s body has been donated to the University of Iowa deeded body program and services will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at a later date at the Society of Friends (Quaker) Cemetery near West Branch, Iowa. A memorial has been established to the United Presbyterian Home. Alice was born on December 6, 1923 near West Branch, Iowa the daughter of Verlin L. and Sara M. (Hinshaw) Pemberton. She graduated from West Branch High School and from the University of Iowa College of Nursing. Alice worked in the operating room at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City during World War II. Alice was united in marriage to Virgil C. Smith on July 19, 1947 near West Branch, Iowa. She lived most of her married life in the Urbandale area. Alice worked as a school nurse for the Urbandale Community School District. Alice moved to the United Presbyterian Home in Washington in February of 2009. She was a district leader for the Girl Scouts Council of Des Moines. She also served as president of the P.T.A. in Urbandale. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, sewing, crocheting, and making teddy bears.

Alice is survived by her children, Dr. Douglas P. Smith and fiancé Susan Hradsky of Austin, Texas; Jeanne L. Woodbury and husband Jerry of West Chester, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jeremy D. Smith, Abbie Smith, and Douglas Smith; and one brother, Ernest L. Pemberton of Denver, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2009; one granddaughter, Angie Smith; and three sisters, Lillian Willaloughby, Bertha Pemberton, and Beulah DeHaven.
