It’s been a snowy winter so far, but most road maintenance entities in Washington County say they’re doing okay on their salt supplies. Riverside says they have at least 30 tons left. On the opposite end of the county, officials in Brighton say they have about 15 tons left. Officials in Washington and Kalona say they’re also in good shape. The Washington County Engineer’s Office says they also have an adequate supply. There are a few factors as to why this is: In many cases, the salt is blended with sand or a special liquid to make a slurry. Many of these entities also ordered salt well in advance. Also, the most recent snow was very dry. Much of it was blown away by the wind, and was also easier for plows to remove.
