Hospital readmissions have been a topic in the debate over health care reform. A new study in a health journal shows that some new mothers are at a higher risk of bouncing back into the hospital. Lisa Houchins with the International Cesarean Awareness Network of Central Iowa says the research shows that women who have C-sections for no medical reason are more likely to be readmitted because of infections and hypertension. Houchins says many women don’t know the risks that go along with this. She says most of the health risks are related to the surgery itself, and she thinks better education is needed for women who are in a situation to make decisions about their child’s birth.
