Two years ago, the legislature ordered a study of public transit in Iowa, with the focus on the needs of seniors and how the system could achieve energy independence. That report is now in the hands of state lawmakers. Michelle McEnany, director of the D-O-T’s office of Public Transit, says at the public hearings used to compile the report, Iowans told her staff that land use decisions are key, such as when new commercial developments are built. The report, according to McEnany, is about more than just buses. It points out the need to rethink how Iowa’s communities are built in the future.
