Measures that ban texting while driving bounced between the Iowa House and Senate several times during this year’s legislative session, undergoing multiple changes. What did we end up with? Reading, writing or sending a text or email while driving is now illegal. It’s still okay to use a GPS device, send texts with voice commands or enter a number to make a voice call. Also, truckers, bus drivers and health care professionals can read texts while driving as part of performing official duties. Anyone can read safety related messages such as an Amber, traffic or weather alert. Violations are a simple misdemeanor with a 100-dollar fine. It is not a moving violation and is not cause to suspend a license.
