President Barack Obama is visiting three communities in southeast Iowa tomorrow, and some of the most economically distressed parts of the state. The president is slated to stop at Seimens Energy in Fort Madision to visit with workers. Then he’ll head to Mt. Pleasant followed by a town hall meeting at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. Wapello, Lee and Henry Counties all had unemployment rates near ten percent last month. That’s compared with a statewide average of less then seven percent. The two day swing is being called the “White House to Main Street Tour.” It’s aimed at shifting attention to the president’s efforts on the economy after months of debate over healthcare reform.
