Southeast Iowa farmers have made some of the most corn planting progress in the state. The weekly USDA crop report shows 72 percent of corn in this corner of the state is in the ground, while nearly five days last week were suitable for field work. The USDA says rainfall late last week and over the weekend helped activate chemicals applied and promote emergence of the newly planted corn. The federal agency says soybean planting is underway, but those waiting for warmer temperatures will now need to wait until the ground dries.
