25 nonprofit organizations in Washington County are in danger of having their tax-exempt status revoked. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics that’s how many groups have yet to file a form with the IRS that will preserve their status. The Iowa State Bar Association says in 2006 Congress Passed the Pension Protection Act which required nonprofits to file Form 990 based on having less than 25-thousand dollars in gross receipts. The act also requires that if a nonprofit group fails to file for three consecutive years, it will presume the organization no longer exists and revoke its tax exempt status. The deadline to filed is today.
