Two state senators are touting new benefits Iowa veterans and active service members are eligible for under legislation passed this session. Fairfield’s Becky Schmitz says one aspect she’s particularly pleased with, is a provision that deals with mental health. Another measure enacted this session was called the “trailing spouse legislation.” Sioux City Senator Steve Warnstad says it allows a military spouses to leave a job and to move with their significant other in the event of relocation orders, and receive unemployment benefits. Iowa has become the first state to go 10 for 10 on the defense department’s list of quality of life issues that affect military families. Schmitz and Warnstadt stopped in Washington on Thursday.
