The Washington Historic Preservation Commission has a few recommendations for the city council. Commissioner Mary Patterson says one of them would be to require that all new buildings in the downtown area have a full and permanent basement. She says this would fit in better with other buildings on the square. Patterson says another issue they’d like to see addressed is what they call demolition by neglect. She says many communities have ordinances against it. Patterson says they’d also like to see the city adopt design standards for the downtown area. May is Historic Preservation Month.
