Southeast Iowa Farmers cannot help feeling discouraged as Mother Nature supplied Iowa with heavy rains for most of last week. The USDA reported large amounts of rainfall in short periods of time have led to erosion, especially in fields that were tilled.  There was less than one day suitable for field work in this corner of the state, compared to the statewide average of less than two days suitable.  Nearly all the expected corn acreage has emerged and rated 2 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 22 percent excellent. Ninety-seven percent of soybeans have been planted, equal to last year and the five-year average. Soybeans emerged reached 92 percent, 2 percentage points ahead of last year and 3 percentage points ahead of the five-year average.  Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 18 percent excellent.  This was Iowa’s wettest week in two years.
