Yesterday, Washington’s Post Office flag and others around the state flew at half staff in honor of Specialist Christopher Opat. Governor Culver says the Iowan was killed on June 15th in Iraq, and the incident is still under investigation.  Opat was serving his 3rd tour of duty of duty in Iraq at the time of his death.  Governor Culver’s directive applies to all U.S. and Iowa flags under control of the State, and federal agencies must also comply when the directive concerns the death of a member of the armed services.
