The speed limit on east Washington Street remains an issue for Washington City Councilors. An Iowa DOT speed study suggests it should be raised, but council members Bob Shepherd and Fred Stark have hesitations about it. The council is moving to remove its own ordinance and rely on the DOT’s recommendation. That’s a point Stark hotly contested. The measure passed first reading this week. It was previously slated for final approval, but because some councilors were absent at previous meetings, the required super majority vote was not obtained, so the process had to start over.
