The Kalona Public Library has a free summer reading program for kids and teens to help motivate them to keep reading while school is out.  Youth Services Librarian Marissa Tartaglia says the kids keep a log of their reading time, and are rewarded with prizes.  She says many studies have been done about keeping kids reading through the summer, and has shown children transition back into school easier when reading throughout the summer.  The events for the third week of their summer reading program begins Monday the 21st. Kindergarteners through second graders will be doing fish bowl and pirate crafts.  A complete schedule of the week’s reading program for June 21st through the 25th can be obtained by calling the Kalona Public Library or on the web at kplyyouth@kctc.netdot.
