Today at 5pm, the Washington Community Center will host a community farewell for Iowa National Guard soldiers based in the city. The Iowa National Guard says 60 members of Washington’s 134th Medical Company have been assigned under a partial mobilization call-up that authorizes the president to order members of the Guard and Reserves to active duty for up to a year. The 134th Medical Company served in the Persian Gulf in the early 90s for Desert Storm, and also again in 2005 for Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 60 Guard soldiers will train with other units in Iowa and Missouri before leaving for Afghanistan later this year.
