Wet Weather Means More Millipedes

The Iowa State Extension Office says flooding during the last three weeks in southeast Iowa has allowed for greater than normal millipede populations in Washington and surrounding counties. Regional Extension Education Director Gene Mohling says the use of household insecticides against the bug provide little benefit, but adds that millipedes cannot bite or sting, and usually die when they move into the drier conditions of a basement or garage.  Millipedes are brown or black in color and roll into circles when disturbed.
