Demons beat Raiders in postseason opener

The Washington Demons began their postseason hosting Williamsburg on Saturday. In the postseason there is a coin toss before the game to determine home and away teams which the Raiders won so the Demons were actually the visiting team on their field. Washington was in a jam early in the bottom of the first and one out Williamsburg had runners at second and third but Demon pitcher Greta Smeins struck out two batters to get out of it. Washington got on the board first in the bottom of the third with Maddie Bohr getting on with a base hit, stealing second and scoring on a Sammy Ellingson base hit. In the bottom of the fourth Caitlin Fishback led off with a base hit and pinch runner Grace Redlinger came in on a Kaitlin Bucholtz double. The Demons won 2-0. Once the Demons got the lead they would retire 15 of the next 19 batters they faced. Greta Smeins gave up five hits, struck out eight, and went to a three ball count once and struck the girl out on a full count. The Demons imporve to 27-9. They now will head to Mount Pleasant tonight for a regional semifinal match up with Fort Madison. The Bloodhounds beat Mount Pleasant Saturday 4-2. Washington and Fort Madison split in their two regular season doubleheaders. You can hear tonight’s game right here on the one to count on KCII we’ll be on the air at around 7-pm.

On the other side of the regional bracket, Keokuk beat Fairfield 6-2 and Pella beat Centerville 1-0. The winners of tonight’s games will play Wednesday for a trip to the state tournament in Fort Dodge.
