Four people were killed and 49 injured in Iowa in 2009 from crashes at rural intersections caused by obstructed view from trees and crops, accidents that cost the state nearly half a million dollars. Washington County Engineer David Patterson says several limited view areas exist, including railroad crossings just east and west of Washington. He says the county has gone to great lengths over the past 10 years to reduce the amount of limited view areas by constructing “sight triangles” that give drivers improved line of sight at rural intersections. Patterson says the greatest problem seems to come at low volume intersections where people may roll through an intersection and not see oncoming traffic.
