New laws in Iowa made it illegal for men and women convicted of domestic abuse to possess firearms on July 1st, but the legislation acts retroactively. Washington County Deputy Jared Schneider says anyone convicted of domestic abuse, before or after July 1st, cannot legally possess firearms, and must follow new legal guidelines for the removal of firearms from their custody and their disposal.  For questions regarding new gun laws, contact the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.
