Former Governor Terry Branstad and his lieutenant governor nominee State Senator Kim Reynolds were in Washington yesterday for a town hall meeting. Branstad told supporters as governor he’ll bring “right to work” legislation back to the state, would retool education initiatives such as Iowa’s free preschool program to ensure government can deliver on its promises, and told the crowd he wants Iowans to decide for themselves whether or not gay couples can marry in the state. Branstad said the U.S. is five years away from the financial problems Greece faces today, and said he thought Washington’s lowest unemployment rate for the year, 5.2% in May, was because of local businesses, not Governor Chet Culver.
