January 1st will be the start of a new year, and also sweeping gun changes in Iowa. Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar says new laws will allow county residents to carry fully loaded shotguns, handguns, and rifles into private businesses and most public spaces. Dunbar says currently he and other Iowa Sheriffs have the authority to use discretion when issuing such permits, but that power will be taken away starting January 1st, 2011. Some Iowa residents won’t be allowed to openly carry with the new law, including anyone convicted of a felony, domestic abuse, or adjudicated by the state as mentally incompetent. Sheriff Dunbar will speak about the change during today’s In Touch With Southeast Iowa program around 12:50pm.
