The City of Wellman says infants younger than 6 months could become seriously ill, or even die, from drinking the city’s water. Symptoms include shortness of breath and “blue baby syndrome”, a condition indicated by an infant’s skin color that requires immediate medical attention. Testing indicates the level of nitrates present in Wellman’s tap water exceed state regulations, and present a health hazard that cannot be remedied with boiling or other purifying techniques. The city says infants younger than 6 months can’t process the high level of nitrates, but children older than 6 months and adults are able to drink tap water. Pregnant woman women and anyone with specific health concerns are encouraged to consult a doctor. For more information, call the City of Wellman at 319.646.2154.
