In wake of July 24th’s Lake Delhi dam breach in northeast Iowa, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has identified 31 dams in the state with deficiencies, including one in Washington county. The DNR says the spillway at Lake Darling “appears in relatively good condition,” but notes “two significant defects” with the dam, placing it on Iowa’s list of 14 “moderate hazard” dams.  No loss of life is expected if “moderate hazard” dams fail, but economic losses and environment damage could occur.  The dam at Lake Darling is currently under construction but could be back to normal water levels by September of next year.
