Two properties owned by Washington’s Marion Avenue Baptist Church have either partially collapsed or been involved in a collapse in the last five years. A church owned property at 221 West Washington Street suffered major damage on Sunday morning when part of its roof collapsed, just four years after a 2006 Marion Avenue structural collapse damaged an adjacent church property at 207 South Marion. City Administrator David Plyman says insurance and city inspectors have been inside the property, and preliminary reports of why the roof collapsed point to rotted wood trusses. Plyman says 221 West Washington Street remains a “dangerous building” as the city doesn’t know the integrity of the rest of its roof. Both lanes of traffic remain closed on South Avenue B. KCII will bring you more details as they become official.
