Water samples taken in Wellman have again shown high levels of nitrites. Nitrite in drinking water can be a serious health concern for infants less than six months old. Do not make baby formula or any type of juice mixes with the water. Boiling, freezing, filtering or letting water stand does not reduce the nitrite level. City Administrator Dave Ross says bids for a new reverse osmosis water treatment project will be taken mid month, with completion set for next summer. Ross says to help minimize the nitrite level, the city has been flushing fire hydrants, and slightly increasing chlorine residual levels in the water system.
