The Washington County Board of Supervisors has awarded a $461,000 contract to replace a bridge on Hickory Avenue, northeast of Wellman.  The county chose the lowest bidder, Peterson Contractors of Reinbeck, Iowa, to save money, but County Engineer David Patterson says in-house drawings have also saved the county tax payer dollars.  Tuesday Peterson told supervisors this was the first substantial bridge project in the last ten years to be designed completely in-house, allowing the county to save the typical cost for plans designed by a private company, typically eight to ten percent of the total bridge replacement cost.  According to those figures, Washington County has already saved $46,000 on Wellman bridge project.  Work is scheduled to begin next spring.
