Summer Heat Could Cause Pavement To “Blow Up”

The Iowa Department of Transportations is warning motorists that summer heat could cause the state’s pavement to “buckle and shatter”. Washington County Engineer David Patterson says high temperatures combined with an above average amount of moisture in the ground can create “pavement blowups” that literally “just [pop]”without warning.  Patterson says pavement blowups have already occurred on the Wayland, Crawfordsville, Prairie Flower and Riverside roads, adding that a large blowup occurred two weeks ago on Highway 1.  If you see a “pavement blowup” in Washington County, report it immediately by calling the Washington County Public Safety Center at 653-2107.
