Governor Culver signed a proclamation on Tuesday that temporarily allows trucks hauling harvests of heavier weights. The lift is aimed specifically at harvests of corn, soybeans, hay, straw and stover. Washington County Engineer David Patterson says it allows farmers for the purposes of transporting grain from the farm to the bin to transport up to 10% over the legal load limit of semi’s and grain wagons.

The proclamation directs the Iowa Department of Transportation to monitor the temporary lift. The proclamation includes all Iowa roads, but does not include the federal interstate system. Patterson says the proclamation does not affect anyone but farmers, but it is always important during harvest time that drivers should be aware of slower moving vehicles. The weight exemption is good for 60 days, and began on Tuesday.
