The Iowa Department of Revenue has released details about a new plan to reduce up to 50% of Iowans growing court debt. Washington County Attorney Barb Edmondson says the Iowa Court Debt Amnesty Program allows those with court debt assessed before December 1st, 2006, to pay half the amount owed in exchange for total forgiveness of the remaining debt.  She says the program only covers certain types of court costs and encourages Washington residents to visit paythefineiowa.gov for more information.  Edmondson believes the program is a sign that the state is trying to get as much money flowing into the budget as it can, adding that efforts will be made to start similar programs in other areas of state government.
