Nearly Three Of Every Ten Iowans Obese, Washington County Public Health To Unveil New Anti-Obesity Program

A Center for Disease Control and Prevention report says no state met the country’s Healthy People 2010 Goal to lower obesity to 15% of Americans. Iowa is far from that goal, with 27.9% of its population described as obese.  The Iowa Department of Public Health says a new program called “Iowans Fit For Life” attempts to lower that percentage by supporting “healthy living and active living” through suggestions to make communities more “walkable”, improve the healthfulness of food at restaurants and grocery stores, and school and community nutrition and physical activity intervention.  Washington County Supervisor Jim Rosien says the county’s public health department is also working on a program to curb obesity, and will unveil the program at an event on September 30th.
