Washington County Public Health Offers Tips To Avoid Illness During 500 Million Egg Recall

Positive salmonella tests have made two Iowa companies voluntarily recall 500 million eggs that were sent to more than 20 states across the county, but medical professionals say if cooked properly, even eggs with salmonella won’t make you sick. Washington County Public Health nurse Lynn Fisher says if eggs are cooked thoroughly “until both the white and the yolk are firm” you won’t become ill.  Similar to recalls of beef and other meats, the danger of infection is only present if the product is not handled and cooked properly.  For more egg safety tips and a description of how to identify recalled brands and egg cartons, visit
