The Kalona Valley Apartments will be breaking ground on a new five unit addition today. The addition is funded in part by a USDA Rural Development $220,000 grant. Bill Menner, State Director of USDA Rural Development says Kalona Valley Apartments applied to the USDA because they support rural communities and projects that enhance life in those communities. He says having available housing is apart of that. He says anytime they see an apartment complex in a rural town add units it is a big deal. He says this is a good project because it is an established apartment complex that has grown over the years. Menner says he also thinks that the fact that the State of Iowa was involved through the I Jobs program and that the city of Kalona participated as well adds leverage and shows a good partnership. After the latest phase of construction the apartment complex will be able to offer a total of 48 units. The ground breaking will be at 702 C Ave. in Kalona at 4pm today.
