President Barack Obama may be pushing for students to spend more time in the classroom by adding more days, but at least one local superintendent doesn’t think that would be possible in South East Iowa. Mark Schneider, Superintendent for Mid-Praire and Keota Schools said that while he personally likes the idea of a longer school year, he doesn’t think it would be possible in our area. One of the issues of having a longer school year he says would you would have to pay staff for more days, and he says that would be difficult in this economic time to find the money to do that. Schneider says another obstacle to over come would be the installing and cost of air conditioning. Currently he says only half of Mid Praire’s schools have air conditioning. According to the National Center on Time in Learning a longer school year can boost learning in all students.
