The American Red Cross is urging families in Washington and across Eastern Iowa to install and maintain working smoke alarms. The Red Cross Grant Wood Area Chapter is partnering with community firefighters to provide Battery Up, a free program offering in-home fire prevention to elderly, disabled and low-income residents. Today from 6 to 8 pm, Washington firefighters and Red Cross volunteers will visit residents to change smoke detector batteries and identify fire safety hazards in the home, but only if you make an appointment. Call the Grant Wood Area Chapter at 1-800-982-2438 or register online at grantwood-redcross.org. Last year the chapter replaced or installed smoke detector batteries in 525 homes.
