October is “Domestic Violence Awareness Month.” The Iowa Attorney General’s Department of Justice reports 216 domestic violence murders have taken place in the state since January 1st, 1995, including 25 children.  Washington County Attorney Barb Edmondson says domestic violence “affects virtually everybody.”  She says “81 cases of domestic assault cases [have been] filed in Washington County in the last two years,” the “vast majority” of which ended in guilty pleas or convictions.  Offenders must then pay for and participate in the sixteen week “Batterer’s Education Program.”  In Johnson, Iowa and Washington Counties, support is available through the Domestic Violence Intervention Program by calling 1-800-373-1043 or visiting dvipiowa.org.
