The Washington County Board of supervisors has approved changes to county employees’ health insurance. Washington County Assistant Auditor Phyllis Hofer told the board Tuesday the “large health plan committee” recommended increasing the “stop loss”, the amount per person that is covered by the county and not an additional insurance provider, from $40 to $45,000.  Hofer said the change would save the county $23,000 each year in insurance premiums but presented more risk.  The committee also recommended adding organ transplant coverage as new technology has increased the likelihood of the surgery taking place.  The Board unanimously approved the health plan changes which go into effect begin January 1st of 2011.  Increasing mental health coverage was also discussed but that and other changes were mandated by recently passed federal health care legislation.
