One in nine Iowa families have struggled at some point between 2007 and 2009 to put food on the table according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Andrew Cannon, a research associate for the nonpartisan Iowa Policy Project says that as high as food insecurity has been in the state, Iowa is doing better than many other Midwestern states and is about average nationally. A “food insecure” household means that at some time over the last year, they have had difficulty providing enough food for its members due to a lack of resources. If you feel like you might be food insecure call 211 from any land line for food bank information.
