The Iowa Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of a family who sued the University of Northern Iowa after their child was injured on a field trip saying the waiver they signed was against public policy. Superintendent Mike Jorgensen of Washington says the ruling states the waivers are not enforceable when dealing with negligence, which isn’t a far stretch from the original rule. Jorgensen says they have some concerns about the ruling, but are hoping to get further clarification. He says at this point, it’s too early to say much else, but the fact remains, schools will be held accountable if negligence occurs at an event when waivers have been signed.
