Crews responded to a house fire late yesterday morning just south of Kalona at the home of the Nisly family at 1216 Maple Avenue in Rural Kalona. Kalona Fire Chief Steve Yotty says the fire began in the garage and shop area of the house. One person was home at the time but a neighbor was able to wake them up to get them out of the house. The house did suffer extreme smoke damage, but most of their belongings were saved. The shop area is a complete loss. Yotty says they put the fire out around 5 p.m.  He says it took so long to put out the fire because there was a massive fuel load inside the garage of paint, aerosol cans and tires. Yotty says the State Fire Marshall did inspect the scene but the cause has not been determined yet. The Family is currently staying with relatives. Kalona Fire Department, Kalona First Responders, Riverside Fire Department, Wellman Fire Department and Wellman First Responders, Washington County Ambulance and Washington County Sheriff responded to the scene. KCII will bring you more information as it becomes official.
