For the first time ever Columbus Junction’s historic swinging bridge is lighted for the holidays. Parks and Recreation Chairman Jim Gabriel says the committee has been working on taking more community pride in city attractions. He says they lighted the bridge to make the bridge a little more attractive and visible from the road. With the support of the council and neighbors Gabriel says he was able to purchase and string the lights on the bridge and run drop cords to near by houses.
Right now the plan is to light it through the month of December but he says maybe in time they could light it year round with either Christmas lights, spotlights or streetlights. For that though he says they have to get power to the bridge. He says they haven’t had any trouble with vandalism. Gabriel says they have had a great response to the lights from both the community and people who have passed through. The current lights can be seen through January 1st from dusk till midnight.
