The Kalona City Council met on Monday and one of the main items on their agenda was the discussion of a Storm Sewer Comprehensive Plan. City Administrator Ryan Slabaugh says they are looking at several options for a comprehensive plan and are partnering with Garden & Associates in Kalona to be able to better manage the storm water that enters the community. He says they are looking to get approval for the plan at the next meeting as well as work with both FEMA and the DNR as they are in the middle of being mapped for the National Flood Plain Insurance Program and the two are connected. Slabaugh says the floodplain mapping is about six months away from being complete. He says currently maps show different floodplains in Kalona then what past maps had shown. The Council also discussed the Downtown Revitalization project which Slabaugh says is 91% complete and is now on hold until early spring 2011 because of cold weather. He says they also had an annual report from a representative from the Kalona Public Library who said that their usage was up where library usage nationwide is declining.
