Christmas Tree Disposal

Christmas is over and now people are wondering what they can do with their Christmas trees. ISU Extension Field Horticulture Specialist Patrick O’Malley says there are usually various outlets for Christmas trees. He says some people put them outside for bird and small animal habitat or cut the branches for mulch for strawberries. He says some county conservation centers accept trees to be turned into either mulch or under water habitats. O’Malley suggests contacting your city hall first to know what ordinances they have on the disposal of Christmas trees.

The city of Washington says Christmas tree pickup will be on January 10. They ask people to put trees on the corner but don’t block fire hydrants. The city will then take the trees to either the DNR or waste water treatment plant.
