When winter weather approaches, the Iowa Department of Transportation is ready to tackle the challenge of clearing the roads. IDOT District 5 Maintenance Manager Ken Morrow says they have a full supply of salt ready. He says their supply is replenished after each storm so they always have plenty on hand. Morrow shares that many times IDOT will use a brine solution more instead of salt because it will help the snow or ice melt faster which he says will work in temperatures as cold as zero degrees. Morrow also says when driving on roads and you see the plows, be sure to drive at a safe distance behind them so you can stop safely.
