We finish up our look back at some of the area’s top sports stories of 2010 and today we finish with cross country and a semifinalist in football.

The IMS boys’ cross country team once again had the state champion in Class 1A. In 2009, IMS won the team title and junior Bill Spencer won the individual crown. In 2010, the team returned and placed sixth, but Spencer was successful in defending his crown. At the meet, the field started at a faster pace, but IMS Head Coach Marty Gingerich says Spence kept his cool and maintain his pace. Because of this, Spencer had quite a few ahead of him, but in the second mile he caught up to the leaders and tried to make a break. He couldn’t shake the group. Gingerich says Spencer was patient and would make a second break away attempt in an uphill portion of the course and this time he was successful. Spencer would win for the second year and finish with a time of 15:54 thirty-two seconds faster than his championship time the year before and ten seconds faster than the second place finisher. Spencer becomes the first IMS cross country runner to win back to back state titles.
