If you have ever wondered how the Iowa Department of Transportation updates their road information, we have the answer. Iowa Department of Transportation Winter Operations Administrator Annette Dunn says they use a variety of resources to gather their information besides reports from law enforcement. She says they can use roadside cameras which provide a better view of road conditions. Dunn notes road sensors are equipped to detect pavement temperatures. She says they rely on weather reports to monitor any storm conditions. Road reports from other states are used to assist motorists who may be traveling to that particular state and IDOT maintenance personnel are important because they are actually on the roads.
