The Washington Streets Committee held a meeting on Wednesday regarding a possible change to Madison Street in Washington. Committee Chair and City Councilor Karen Wilson-Johnson says the Iowa Department of Transportation presented an idea to the city of changing the lane configuration on Madison Street to three lanes instead of four. She says the plan would change the lanes to one in each direction with a center turn lane going from East 2nd Street to the Highway 1 interchange. Wilson-Johnson says this change could happen after IDOT resurfaces Madison Street in fiscal year 2012. She says many residents at the meeting expressed concern that reducing the street to three lanes could cause more problems because of the larger amount of slower moving vehicles that use Madison Street. Wilson-Johnson says many residents feel the speed of the road is an issue and would like to see the speed limit enforced if possible. She says another meeting regarding the changes on Madison Street will be held in February.
